How many watts do I need for a home speaker?

For home listening at moderate volumes (75-85 dB SPL), 20-50 watts per channel is sufficient for speakers with 86-90 dB sensitivity. For louder listening or less sensitive speakers, 50-100W may be needed.

Does more watts mean louder?

Not proportionally — doubling watts adds only 3 dB of volume. Going from 10W to 100W (10× more power) adds only 10 dB, which sounds roughly twice as loud. Speaker sensitivity has a much larger impact on perceived loudness than amplifier wattage.

What is speaker sensitivity?

Speaker sensitivity is the SPL (in dB) produced at 1 meter distance when driven with 1 watt of power. A speaker rated 90 dB/1W/1m produces 90 dB at 1 meter from 1 watt. Higher sensitivity = louder per watt = needs less amplifier power.

What is dynamic headroom and why is it important?

Dynamic headroom (typically 6-10 dB) is extra amplifier power reserved for transient peaks in music. Music is not a constant tone — peaks can be 10-20 dB above average level. Without headroom, the amplifier clips on peaks, causing distortion.

How does distance affect required power?

Sound level drops 6 dB each time you double the distance from the speaker. A speaker producing 90 dB at 1m delivers only 84 dB at 2m and 78 dB at 4m. This means you need 4× the power to maintain the same volume at twice the distance.
